Update 11/10/24

Tournament structure

Tournament play will consist of three phases:

  • Phase 1: Tavistock-style incomplete round robin
    • Results of this initial round robin will sort players into groups for the next phase
    • Number of rounds equal to half the total number of players (rounded down)
  • Phase 2: Group Play
    • Results of this complete round robin within each group will seed players for the single elimination phase
    • Players will be divided into groups in the following way. (This is a slight change from the structure I described in a previous email.)
      • Group A
        • Top 8 players from Phase 1
      • Group B and Group C
        • If there are fewer than 16 total players, all remaining players will end up in Group B
        • If there are greater than 16 total players, all remaining players will be divided equally between Groups B and C (with one fewer player in Group C if the total number of players is odd).
  • Phase 3: Single elimination bracket
    • Results of this three-round bracket will determine final placements and the winners of each group.
    • Quarterfinal and semifinal games will be a race to 7
    • Group finals will be a race to 9
    • Group A will play a full bracket with 8 players. Assuming Groups B and C have fewer than 8 players, higher-seeded players will receive an initial bye, as needed.
    • This will be strictly single elimination. There will be no additional matches for third place, etc.
    • Some things to keep in mind:
      • Group A will end up taking 1st through 8th place. The winner of Group B will end up taking 9th place, etc.
        • This makes the initial round robin very important for final placement!
      • Your final placement will reflect the seed of the player you lost to.
        • For example:
          • In the first round of the bracket, if the number 1 seed in Group A loses to the number 8 seed, that player will end up placing 8th for the tournament. (The number 8 seed would effectively take over the number 1 seed at that point.)
          • In the second round of the bracket, there will be four players left (now ranked 1 through 4). The losing players in this round will end up placing 3rd and 4th, while the winning players move on to decide 1st and 2nd.
